Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is Young Adult Ministry?
Young Adult Ministry is an outreach of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago to young adults -- women and men in their twenties and thirties, married and single. Our purpose is to put people in contact with each others their own age who share their faith and values, and offer some alternatives to what is currently available in our culture.

2. Are there people around who share my values?
Absolutely! And they, like you, are looking to meet others their age who share our Christian values. Young Adult Ministry can help put you in contact with other people and programs that respond to your interests and needs.

3. The bars are good, but is there anything else?
Visit the Calendar to find out what's happening for people in their 20s and 30s throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago and beyond. Or, send an e-mail or give us a call. We can direct you to places where young adults gather.

4. How do you meet good people once you've moved here?
Get involved! What would you love to do? There are young adults coming together to have a good time and just be social, to dialog with one another and reflect on what's important, to share gifts through service projects, to learn more about the Catholic faith, and to participate in great worship. You are invited to connect with others for whatever interests you most.

5. What does it mean to be a person of faith today?
Great question! How about gathering with your peers for a small faith group, a dialogue group, or Bible study to discuss it further? We can help you find some good options for entering into great conversation.

6. Is there any good worship around?
Young Adults tell us they are looking for a parish with great preaching, great music and great hospitality. We are happy to help you find a parish where you can be spiritually fed, get involved, and share your gifts.

7. Where can I give some of my time or talent?
There are lots of ways to share your time and talent! You are welcome to connect with our Volunteers in Action link, or consider a special project for Advent or Lent. Also, depending upon how you would like to share your gifts, we might be able to plug you into some wonderful parish service projects. Occasionally, organizations host a week long service project. Those will be posted on our website calendar. Also, if you are looking for a greater commitment (1-3 years), we can help you find some options.

8. Exactly what types of services are available through your office?
We can assist you -- or find others who can assist you - in the following ways:

  • A. Direct you to places of worship
  • B. Invite you into programs based upon expressed needs
  • C. Help you learn more about the Catholic faith
  • D. Support services -- we can refer you to qualified counselors, grief support, 12-step programs, divorced support, etc.
  • E. Sacramental preparation (marriage prep, baptismal prep, confirmation, etc.)
  • F. Help you find a Spiritual Director to explore where God is at work in your life
  • G. Find places to volunteer your time and talent

  • 9. Are there other options for connecting with your office besides your location at 711 W. Monroe in Chicago?
Yes! We are in the process of establishing "Ruah Centers" for Young Adult Ministry. Currently, we have one center:

  •  The Isaac Hecker Center is located at Marian Catholic High School, 700 Ashland Ave., Chicago heights, IL, 60411 (in the southeast suburbs). Mr. Terry Shelley, director, can be reached at 708-756-9752 or tshelley@yamchicago.org.

  • Young Adult Ministry is our job and our joy. What can we do for you? Can we be of help? Do the questions and issues printed here ring true in your own life? Can we put you in contact with other very fine young adults?

If there is any way we can be of assistance to you, please contact us at 312/466-9473, or yam@yamchicago.org. We'll try to help. That's a promise.
